“I’ve been hurt.”

If you’ve been hurt in an accident, your first responsibility is to do everything you can to recover from your injury. You should follow the advice of all of your health care providers. They are all professionals and should know what is best for you. If you have any questions about your diagnosis or your recovery, do not hesitate to contact your health care providers and get answers for all of your questions.

In many cases, persons who are injured in accidents need specialized care. If you think you need specialized care, contact your primary health care providers and discuss the issue with them. In many cases, health insurance carriers require a referral from a primary care medical provider before they agree to pay for specialized care.

If you have medical insurance, either through your employer or through programs such as Medicare or Medicaid, make sure your medical bills are sent to the insurance provider for payment. If you receive compensation for your injuries, the medical insurance provider can be repaid at that time.

Keep track of all of your medical records and bills. If you have time, keep a journal or other record of your medical appointments. Sometimes, in complicated medical cases, it is difficult to remember of all of this information at a later time.

If you have a nagging or lingering injury that you never fully recover from, try to maintain a journal documenting what you feel like and how the injury affects you on a day to day basis.

Finally, before you discuss your situation with an insurance adjuster, contact an attorney who is working for you, not the insurance company.
