AG Weighs In On Taser Use

MONTPELIER, V.t. -- Attorney General William Sorrell said Brattleboro police "blew it" by using excessive force in two incidents last July that involved electric stun weapons.

In one case, two peaceful protesters were shocked. In the other, a device was used against a teenage psychiatric patient.

Sorrell released a report Monday on the use of Tasers and similar weapons by police agencies around Vermont. He said Tasers can be a good tool for police in subduing someone who is combative and can be a good replacement for other weapons more likely to cause injury or death.

Despite the findings, Sorrell said he is not calling for criminal charges against the Brattleboro officers.
