Lawyer for Guantanamo Prisoner Fears Phone was Tapped

Associated Press - September 19, 2007 8:55 AM ET

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A prominent Vermont lawyer who represents a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is concerned that his phone may be tapped by the federal government.

The lawyer makes frequent calls to Afghanistan on behalf of his client.

An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union says the home phone of Bob Gensburg has acted strangely, gone dead and there have been strange buzzing sounds.

Gensburg's attorney says he never had such problems before he started representing the client at Guantanamo Bay.

Attorney David Sleigh says a Verizon technician found transposed wires, but didn't say how the lines were transposed or why.

A Verizon spokeswoman says the company doesn't comment on national security issues.
